Relationship between Internet and Other Media Violence with the Violent Behaviour in Youth today

Purpose of the study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the linkage between the violent behaviour among youth in today’s society and the internet plus other media. As technology advances and internet resources spreading all over the world, the young generation is getting exposure to online violence and media aggressiveness. This has made them potentially vulnerable to negative experiences online and on the media. Its of great importance for parents and the authority to   understand the internet violence exposures and factors related to the influence of youth violent behaviours. This report will primarily investigate the association involving internet with the changing behaviour among youth in the society.

Literature Review

Violence among youth is an important social issue that has affected individuals, families and the community as whole in a negative manner. Approximations of indirect and direct costs associated with youth violence in the United States of America have hit a value of more than $150billion annually. In 2003 alone, about 15 % of the violent crime victims arrested in the United States were as result of juvenile cases.Research carried out on  the development of aggressive behaviour and violence  shows that serious crimes occurs through a union of factors that comprises of poor performance in school, genetic factors, peer pressure, poor parent-child relationships and the community/neighbours violence. Youth exposure to the internet and the media cannot be singled out as the prior reason for youth violence today but it’s probably the solitary most easily remediable contributing aspect. After a comprehensive investigation of the existing research, researchers have made a conclusion that the scientific discussion over the media violence adds up to violence and aggression is essentially over. The research underscored the necessity for studies indicating the magnitude of the effects of media violence on the more intense categories of violence.

More and more youths are increasingly using he internet with little knowledge on how the exposure to online violence shapes their understanding on the influence of violent media. The use of internet is rapidly becoming the telephone of the 21st century with an approximation of close to 97% youths using online communications. Nearly all young people in the society today have access to the internet .this increase the chances of exposure to online violonce.”Hate pages” is an example of websites that promote discrimination against some specific categories of people. Others include websites that report real violence has the potentiality of impacting cognitive styles that contribute to aggressive retorting among the youth.

Despite the abundant research activities that have taken place, there have been a lot of questions that have rose up creating gaps in the comprehending of the connection between violence in the media and violent behaviour. After considering the prolific evidence of the short-term results of aggression in the media, on the thoughts, arousal and feelings minimum research has considered the connection with violent behaviour amongst the youths. The aftermath of violence in the media on violence has also been noticed crawling to the younger children According to Craig. A et al report on the influence of media in today’s youth summarizes that research on violent films and television, music and video games portrays undisputable evidence that media aggression increases the potentiality of youths becoming violent in both immediate and long term basis. The influence may look huge for milder than for more adverse ways of violence but the effects on severe ways of violence are also substantial.
This is in comparison with the effects of other aggressive contributing factors as well as medical aspects considered important by the medicine community. If someone is exposed to online and media violence only for a short while verbal and physical violent behaviour, aggressive thoughts and emotions may be noticeable in their characters. Frequent exposure especially during child hood May later in life cause the person exercise physical assaults and spouse abuse the report allegates. Nevertheless extreme exposure may lead to serious crimes that may see one become a victim of several years sentence in jail such as aggravated assaults, forcible rape, or even homicide.Several researchers even those with well supported theories fail to mention when and why exposure to online and media violence intensifies aggression.
Though, they do indicate that this exposure triggers the tendency to imitate the behaviours being experienced. The youth involuntary support the beliefs and social behaviours by reducing person’s normal negative approach to violent response. Despite this, no one is totally immune to getting influenced by the media and online violence.Surveys carried out recently show that there have been massive increases in violence in the internet today. More youths are spending most of their time consuming this violence. Conclusions have been that reducing the exposure to these violence will reduce the number of crimes, but less has been done on coming up with what ways that will facilitate the reduction.

Research methodology

Data collection techniques

Most youth in between the age bracket of 18-25 years have been exposed to the internet and media violence during their days of their lives at ultimately all parts of the world. The researcher conducted the study by use of content analysis. This was done using a collection of content material such as magazines news papers journal, books and the internet. Internet surveys were also conducted so as to gather the required   data. Youth respondents were sent invitation requests through an initial e mail-address with random identity using a self created poll online website. Youths were supposed to write short essays responding to the title in the subject matter plus answer some few questions. The response rate was computed as the number of youths who began the research divided by the number of invitations made via the e-mails minus any e-mail requests that were not accepted.Youths who had use internet for at least six months and could read and write English were the required respondents.

After consent was established, youths were supposed to respond to a 30 minute online survey. If the participating youth was in an environment where they could not answer the question with, they were requested to return the survey and respond later. Each youth who responded to the survey will receive a summary of the findings. From the content material the researcher was able to gather the most serious crimes being committed in the United States today.( US Department of Justice, 2010) .For the exposure to violent media, youths were asked  whether they had visited any of the websites in (Appendix III ) in the past one year. This was to determine youth safety in internet. While conducting the study the main areas that the researcher was focusing at included the following and how they contribute to youth violence today.

  • Video and computer games
  • Radio and Music
  • Websites involving real people
  • Websites involving cartoons

Background variables comprised of;

Individual- Youths were requested to give their age; ethnicity, race, and average hours each spend on the internet, music, television and games.Family- youths were asked about the relationship with their parent or guardians. (Appendix II)School- youths gave estimated of the academic performances and school behaviourPeers-youths gave responses to number of their friends who have committed crimes and haw many of them were arrested as a result of violenceCommunity-respondents were prompted to give the exposure to violence in the community by using various things from the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire.

Methodology

The data collected was analyzed statistically to reflect the population of youth aged between 18-25. This was classified according to gender, age, race/ ethnicity, region, education hours each on the internet. The main reasons as to why the researcher used this approach is because;

  • It is relatively  easy to obtain access to the publication or broadcast
  • Its   less expensive an easy to build a representative sample
  • Content analysis technique produces highly reliable data that is easy to replicate.
  • It does not require direct interaction with people affected by the subject being studied.

Looking at the content of the information gathered from the U.S department of defence the researcher wanted to study the type of behaviours that are mostly reported in the stations. The following information was   the main focus;

  • Behaviours likely to result to murder
  • Causes of aggravated assaults, robbery, or sexual assault
  • The number of youth violence  cases reported in annually

From the magazines, journals, books and emails responded by the youth the researcher wanted to determine how youths get exposed to media and internet violence. The following was being content was aimed at;

  • The type of websites frequently visited by the youths.
  • The TV programs and music most youth listen to
  • the parent/ guardian relations in terms of  parent monitoring ,coerce discipline and the emotional bond when they were growing up

Approximated   relations between online and media violence and influence it causes towards youth being violent was reported.

Analysis and Findings

Analysis

Point estimates and proportions reported were weighted and described as below. As expected in the 48% of the young people who responded to the online survey were males and females of 18-25 years. Family, school, individual, community and peer characteristics of the sample and how they relate in accordance to the concurrent report of adverse violent behaviour are shown in (appendix III)

Exposure to violence online

Out of the youth who responded, the researcher found out that 38% of them were exposed to greater than or equal to one type of violent website;3 % were confirmed to have visited greater than or equal to three types of websites exposures. Cases of youth who have visited websites with serious violent behaviours increased by 50 % .With each increase in the number of types of violence websites visited. Appendix III represents the frequency of exposure to websites containing violent content.

Exposure to online violence in comparison to other media

48% of the youth shown that most, many or all of greater equal to one type of   media asked has contexts of violence. The violent behaviour increased by 64% as the number of several types of media for which youth gave many, most or all exposures were violent (appendix II) shows the frequency at which youth reported exposure to violence in the internet Appendix IV shows the relative odds of adverse aggressive behaviour with several levels of violence exposure.

The link between online violence and violent behaviour

In Appendix IV the relative odds of adverse behaviour with exposure to online violence is depicted.6% of the young people who shown greater that or equal to one type of exposure to online violence  reported adverse  aggression in comparison to  the 4% of the young people with minimal or less exposure to the inter net .8% of the youth who visit websites containing violence contexts such as discrimination ,death war or terrorism reported to have adverse violent behaviour in comparison to 3% of the youths who never or are not exposed to these websites.

Distinctive effects of media related violence in the perspective of other risk Aspects

Several youths who visited websites containing contexts such as people fighting, shooting killings more likely became 5 times violent more than the youths who never visited such websites at all. Taking individuals, family school, peer and the community into characteristics into account, all those exposure to violent media were no significantly related to serious behaviour when underlying.

Findings

In this study of 18-25 year old youths, serious adverse violent behaviours such as robbery, sexual assault, shooting and aggravated assaults were associated with the exposure to the media violence.   This relationship is mostly depicted in games, internet, music and from the television. The researcher findings shows that the increasing evidence that most violence is acquired from the media is true and it of great importance to look at the violence prevention. In a broader perspective inter net violence has continuously contributed to violent behaviours amongst youths significantly. Indeed considering all factors such as poor parenting, peer pressure, poor parent child relationship, the internet has contributed mainly in the increment of violence in our community today. Websites containing real people engaging in violence had more influence than websites containing cartoons engaging in violent activities.

Exposure to real violence in the internet that depicts real people is more interactive than any other type of crime exposure has more effect on the youth behaviour. Cartoon is a relatively interactive but do not depict real people. Violence in the television may be realistic but not interactive. This explains why the  internet is the strongest association for promoting crime in our society today since it  a simultaneously interactive environment involving real time  chatting with peers at the same time watching videos. The internet and other emerging Medias such as the play stations deserve extra research on the same context.

Despite these results it should be noted that there is quite a number of youths who have never visited or even heard of these websites containing violent materials. Actually lack of knowledge on the existence  of such websites is quite a protective measure against the aggressive behaviour. Parents and guardians face quite a tough challenge though its duty to make sure their children are not exposed t o these violent media. If the youth mention having heard or visited these websites the parents should make sure that they discus and help them understand the adverse influence they may cause in their lives. They should relate this to the context of the real world situations and talk about the seriousness of the matter in the common life experiences. This will help the youth to  learn and choose what is right.

Other factors leading to violent behaviour among youths reported by the youths as expected included school peer, community and family risk factors. From the findings community   violence exposed many youths to  violence in a  manner associated by  consumption of violence from  the media. This includes television programs and  music unlike the community violence which the parents and guardians cannot control, they have the ability to control exposure to the internet violence the use of software filtering and blocking some sites should be ensured.According to the researchers findings most of the youth gets exposed to online and media violence at a tender age that is from age of five. If the parents do control what their children view at the point it will be very difficult to reverse by the time they are teenager.

During   teenage period they start showing rebellion and some of the aggressive behaviours acquired and before they get  into young adults they are practicing serious crimes that can sent them to jail .it is of great importance to for parents to know what contents their children are exposed to in order to shape them into responsible junior and senior citizen. The government should also intervene so as to enforce  laws on the media bodies and control what is aired to the citizens to view.Basing these findings with those of the past, the researcher can easily conclude that the internet and the media have direct influence on the behaviour of the youth in today’s lives. Action should be taken in order to minimize aggressive behaviours and to reduce the number of youth being convicted due to this kind of exposure.

Critique of the study

Generally, the media and the internet are very important resources of getting information and knowledge. They have so much to offer to the youthful generation in a way tat if used adequately and in the correct manner young people can gains and benefit in many ways. These two powerful resources tend to increase the cognitive attitudes, values and behaviours of individuals who use them wisely promoting good behaviour as well. Practically, youths use the internet to connect with friends and families express individuality and even access resourceful information in their education. The internet provides a lot of opportunities to the youth some of them are even income generating. For example they can use the internet to post eye catching pictures and videos captures with content that  is valuable and post them to websites that buy such and earn some revenue out  of it. The media too gives the youth a learning experience that enables them to grow physically, spiritually and even emotionally.

Some television and radio programmes engage youth in interactive forums where they can discuss pressing issues in the society that affects them and the society at wholeSo its of great significance to note that inter net and radio despite the evils that they can cause in the society they still can bring development and improve the youth behaviour and life style too. Other media such as video games helps the youth to improve cognitive skills by enabling them to exercise their brains. They also bring youth together and play simulation games such as soccer, tennis, golf, basket ball giving them a real imaginative experience same as the one experienced in the pitch by real players. The new technology that involves 3D images becomes quite interesting. Nevertheless, as much as the media is criticized there is good thing that comes out of it after all.

Communication and Media

Audiences form an important entity in communication. It is because of audience that media has come to existence. This has lead to the media companies constructing messages and looking for ways to convey the messages to the audience. These messages always have a specific meaning to the person conveying them and it’s the role of the audience to try and interpret the text and get the meaning that is important to him and the society. This is through the use of different models of decoding available.

Active audience

Audience become active in media communication channels like television when they are directly involved in the media daily activities like discussions. Television involves its audience in its activities through different ways. When shows are being aired in television channels the presenter always gives a chance for the audience to air their views or give their comments about a certain issue. This is usually through sending of messages using a number which is provided or through online ways by use of internet where people sent email comments. The audience is allowed to choose their best contestant during a show by voting or sending comments. Active audience ensures that viewers give instant feedback to television producers. Then this feedback is incorporated into the production method which ensures the television producers give the audience quality presentations hence meeting their needs which ensures satisfaction to the viewer.

The feed back provided is also important to the television presenters in that it helps them improve their production procedures by correcting the mistakes identified by the viewer and giving the best. The producers are able to see what the viewers were pleased with or were not about the way they handled various issues. The audience can choose to dislike something during active audience interactions because it either affects him or her either morally, politically or depending on their religion. Viewers are always free to give their opinion on this issue. Active interaction can help television presenters to improve on their job through various ways. They help the presenters in developing plot for plays, movies and show. This will help in providing the right material to the viewers. They also help them on handling technical needs of the show and also continuity of the show.
It also helps them to correct their wardrobe and make up. When all this things are in good order it has an advantage to the viewer in that it helps them have interesting shows. Active interaction with the audience helps reduce consumption of media shows passively and also reduces the authority of media producers by making them see the viewers as part and parcel of their presentation thus better results. It also makes presenters to be accountable to viewers by allowing them to give feedback. Virtual involvement in the production process allows viewers to adopt the position of producers and this makes conversion of viewer’s feedback into possible marketing tools. This helps benefit the company (Andrewjevic, 2008)

Passive audience

Viewers are termed to be passive in media when they try to act as slaves to the channels and they are easily manipulated. Passive audience do not have any say but they have to consume what they are given whether it is not starndard, doesn’t meet their needs or whether it affects them in their political life, personal life and religion wise. In passive communication the media will not provide ways for the audience to air their views or give feedback concerning the show being aired or the presenter. This is an advantage to the audience as they always have to consume or listen to shows which are not standard or quality. For example if a television show is airing content that can affect the children in school in terms of their behavior or education. Parents will not have any say because there is no way to communicate their views and the viewers are not free to interact with their presenters. This will lead to the media having a bad impact to the society. The television presenters will not be able to improve on their presentation as the mistakes will not be identified. Passive viewers always are prone to manipulation as they have no say compared to active viewers who are always informed (Andrewjevic, 2008)

Encoding and decoding models

In order for the text to have its clear meaning it’s important for audience to be there to make the right interpretations. Text does not have a single meaning rather than a variety which can be defined by either the text or by the people receiving the text from media. The meaning does not lie always in the text but always in the interpretation of the text. Encoding and decoding model has taken into account that the meanings made by audience about a text can be affected by a number of factors. This includes the social economic structure of the person and also the past experiences the person had. This model also considers the way or the context in which the media message will be consumed. For example if a parent at home is watching the television with his kids and the kids are distracting then the meaning the parents will construct about the show will be different from the meanings he will make when watching the television alone.

The same meanings will be different from the meanings concluded by someone reading a news paper in a quiet room. Other models like the effect model do not consider the text like encoding and decoding model does. The effect model views the society to be made up of isolated people who are vulnerable to messages conveyed by the media. It doesn’t consider the audience as someone who has beliefs, his own opinions, ideas and the person’s attitude. It assume that the audience is passive in receiving and interpreting  information from media but it gives a lot of emphasize on the text and its power to directly influence the society(Hanes,2005)Uses and gratification model considers how the viewer is using the media but not on the effects of the media on the viewer. It suggests that the viewer has his own needs and that is why he turns to the media so as to find satisfaction.
A person needs diversion may be from the stress or pressure he experiences daily, the viewers need for companionship may be with the characters in the television or through having a conversation with friends about the television. The viewer can be in need to compare his life with life of other people in the television or situations presented in the television. Televisions also provide its viewers with information on security matters in the country thus a viewer might need to know the status of security in the country or worldwide. Viewers in this model are viewed to have a variety of information they can choose from so as to satisfy their needs. However, this model views a message to be a parcel of ideas which all the viewers will interpret the same. This model concentrates mostly on how the media information will be consumed by the audience rather than how the ideas will affect the consumers.
It doesn’t also concentrate on how many meanings a message can have from viewers as each person has different capacity and views. It doesn’t give the audience the morale to enjoy the media (Hanes, 2005)The Halls encoding and decoding model assumes that every text has a preferred meaning and also places emphasizes on audience when making meanings. It has both central view on text and the audience. Hall emphasized on the central view on text where by he say that every text has a preferred meaning but its also possible for the text to have a variety of meanings since the viers have different opinions concerning views aired in the media channels. It’s up to the viewer to analyze the text and get out the right information which will suit his needs. This model sees the audience as active users (Hanes, 2005)

Screen theory

Screen theory suggests that all media texts have a mode in which they should be addressed. It also suggests that media text should address its intended audience in a particular manner so as to establish a relationship between the producers of the text and media audience. The mode of address will depend on the media in use. For example cinema which hardly ever address their viewers directly. It also defines that films are only shot to express that the films are real but when it comes to comedy characters always examine the camera. Televisions always differ from cameras as their audience is not expected to pay attention but cinemas demand their audience to pay attention .This implies that televisions have to work hard so as to maintain attention of the audience (Hanes, 2005)I think audience is active in media. This is because of new technology in most communication and media companies and the society which has embraced the new technology thus lowering the level of illiteracy in the society.

The new technology has brought about use of internet which has lead to establishment of cyber café where people are able to go and read mails and also send mails, more networking sites like Facebook which has attracted a lot of people. Most presenters are members of these social sites and ask their viewers to send comments through the sites. Televisions and radio channels have encouraged their audience to send their views or comments concerning a show which is being aired. The audience is given an email address or a mobile number which they can use to send their views. Most radio channels and television stations have brought discussion sessions which have received wide support from their listeners. The listeners send comments via short messages or call to give comments. An example is during news in television channels like Nation TV where they ask viewers to give comments on issues like politics. This has seen the company to have wide market of their programs as they use the session feedback to market their programs. News papers have also created a column for their readers to give their views or comments via email (Best, 1999)

Conclusion

Media should always make the audience to be active in their business. Also the media should try and use the right model to encode and decode their messages. They should always visualize the audience as this will help them in conveying the right message as they will be aware that a text can have several meanings depending on the interpretation of the viewer. The message they convey should be aimed at making the viewer enjoy the media. Also the message should help in building the viewers personality and the society in terms of morale character, politically and education.

Most mass media companies have incorporated traditional norms in their activities like men being dominant in the society. An example is television. This has made mass media to have strong effect on gender.

How Mass Media Affects Gender

Mass media is said to affect gender in several ways. For example televisions portray men to be dominant than women. This is evidenced by men dominating most television and radio productions. During advertisement most men are made to advertise commercial products while women are given a chance to advertise household goods. This is because men are considered to be more authoritative and to have power. This affects women negatively as they are seen of less value in the society and men to be seen superior in the society. In most child advertisements boys are portrayed as violent, active and rational while girls are given house hold duties. This shows that media activities are based on gender dimensions. Most viewers identify themselves with a male character and turn down female characters thus creating a notion that men are successful and women are failures.

For example a girl child feels satisfied whena a male news reader appears on the screen than when a female newsreader. This influences the child’s thought and behavior and she grows knowing that men are better than women. It also intimidates females and shows biasness though the viewer or the society may not see. The media affects gender in terms of employment. Most televisions in the past employed men as they were seen successful compared to women and it resulted to women being discriminated .Mass media is also said to have an effect on gender roles because during most television shows women are given traditional roles like house wives, mothers and nurses while men are given roles that are broad and exciting like husbands and celebrities since they are believed to seek achievement and dominance while women are made to be compliant and supportive. This affects women in that they are not able to work hard and do the jobs designed for men as the society will not allow.
Women dignity is lowered in most media because women are made to be most characters in soaps and also most women watch soaps. Gender issues are also experienced in program choice whereby men are to watch adventure programs that show them to be authoritative and having power and women watch soap opera that show their characteristics as cool and sympathetic ( Preiss, 2007)The media is said to affect gender socialization. This is because most men and women want to do any thing to make their appearance pleasing. It also affects relationships by affecting people’s attitude. Most media has portrayed men as being incapable of showing their feelings and women as capable of showing their feelings (Preiss, 2007)Mass media are not sensitive when it comes to gender as they associate some roles to men and others to women and also they employ according to gender. They should consider gender a very crucial issue in their production by consider women important.
Gender does not conflict with power or violence because violence and power is associated with men while women are said to be cool.Forexample most programs like adventure represent men as violent and having power while in soap operas women are represented as sympathetic(Preiss, 2007)I met Kenny in high school .During this time we were only studying and after finishing our studies we started dating immediately. During this period we started sharing information about our future dreams and encouraging each other to work hard so as to achieve our goals. We also started learning our family background and the likes and dislikes of each person. This was important as we were able to put trust, faithfulness in our relationship. After three years we decided to call off this relationship. This is because I could not trust Kenny and the relationship was also mentally abusive. Although I kept holding the relationship together by being patient and believing that one day he will change it was heard and I had to end it. My worst moment is when I lost my aunt after suffering lung cancer for a long time; this has affected me emotionally.    I have always worked hard in high school and prayed that one day I will get a scholarship. The end of high school has been my best moment since I have managed to get a scholarship award for being the best girl in the institution.
This has enabled me to pay my school fees and it has also motivated me to work hard and relialize my dreams (Preiss, 2007)I have faced a lot of problems during my studies and after completing my education which have affected my education and the possibility of getting a job. First people in the society value only men and thus allow them to go to work or study. This has made young women and girls to feel inferior as they are not able to further their studies. The society also feels that women are supposed to stay in the house and do household duties. This culture has tied most women and they cannot read or get employed. After a long period the government has finally intervened and brought people to teach the community about the importance of girl child. This has opened the doors for many women as they are able to study and work without discrimination. Girls and young women have been involved in games between different tribes which has made us to share our views and thus building trust (Preiss, 2007)

Conclusion

Mass media should pay equal attention to men and women when it comes to employment and roles. This is because women have been seen inferior in most media activities thus limiting them in exploiting their potential.

Media’s Attention On Public Figures And Celebrities

The media coverage of celebrities have received great attention from the public who blame the media for the amount of time in coverage of celebrity scandals and their normal routine life in business and family life across political and major demographic groups. The public points a finger towards the news organizations and media for giving celebrity stories so much coverage. There is a debate that also the public is to blame also for paying attention to them both equally with the media houses.

Both women and men are affected on this issue but women are more prone to follow tabloid stories than men do.Media practices and new organizations are blamed mostly for tabloid news but because of the core audience these stories tend to stick around as much as blaming fingers point at each other. The biggest purveyor of public figures and celebrities is the network television more than newspapers. Network news offer most coverage of these stories followed by internet news websites, newspapers and new radio programs consecutively.
The world of famous people and celebrity media has grown in proportion in recent years, where these people have to contend with not only coverage of their beauty but also their blemishes, achievements and their flaws. This attention paid to celebrities has led to the part of the paparazzi who take advantage of situations in celebrity life by closer following up by using photographs. Photographs reign supreme when it comes to tabloids and news stories. Magazines utilize these images where there is need for less actual use of words to tell the story of what is happening to the celebrity life. This is the price of fame that that the celebrities pay for coverage of their careers and social life. Celebrities are more than not forced to live on a “perfect” life because of the images portrayed by the media as to living the actual normal human life which has its flaws and issues.
Perfectionism and ideal image famous people try to portray usually leads to scandals in relationship affairs, drug abuse and criminal offences which push them up the wall in the celebrity complexity (Jaffe, 2005). Example many actresses in Hollywood are making the headlines with possible issues of eating disorders in promoting body images which are not possible for humans to attain. This makes them walk to an extremely thin line which makes them look to being dangerously underweight. The battle of anorexia which is an eating disorder associated with intense fear of getting fat or gaining weight is a grave issue to these models coupled with aspects of having cellulite or flab under their skin. These eating disorders have been tied with severe psychological problems by researchers with people having anorexia and bulimia who are generally depressed.
Many people especially the teens do not realize physical or psychological dangers of trying to attain these reed-like bodies of the celebrities they are trying to emulate with the media having a tremendous influence in impacting the girls to be thin. Females are not only the victims but also males have been affected also with eating disorders. This is as a result of their focus on their bodies making them exercise extremely to remove calories which is associated with exercise bulimia. Therefore celebrity media is spinning out of control with more combative techniques and tactics being employed by “guerilla photographers” , that is the paparazzi who pry into celebrity lives to get news stories that will make headlines and sold to network news and tabloid magazines. These photographers usually have other motives than providing news coverage and end up making millions of dollars. Measures should be placed as few tend to defend the extreme tactics used by media coverage and the paparazzi in disseminating news.

Essay On Non Verbal Communication

Communication is the process by which information is transferred from one party yon other. This involves the communication of feelings, thoughts or opinions. People use different different methods to communicate for example speech signs or writings.Non verbal communication is the process of communication where message is sent or received by the use of wordless messages. This can be through gestures body language, eye contacts or facial expressions. Most of the time non verbal communication is done on face to face interaction. This is understood well by the behaviour of the communicator.(ronald 2005)It’s a Monday morning when I feel so down. I just feel bored the whole day.Infact the whole ends without me even smiling which is very unusual for me because I always keep smiling to people in the office. People have responded to my behaviour in different ways. The first person to enter my office was Peninah the secretary .She entered my office smiling at me. She continued smiling at me despite the fact that I was not smiling back at her. She gave me the letter she had brought but as she was leaving my office she asked me what was wrong with me that day.
She was so much concerned on what was not going well with me but I insisted that all was well. She tried cracking some jokes but to no avail. Then she went out dissatisfied with my reactions. The next person I met was the tea girl by the name Janet. When she entered my office she was jovial but noticing my mood she greeted me serve me the tea and went out. I came to realise later that she went to the secretary’s office and asked her if she had met me. I understand that they discussed my behaviour and they decided to send our person relation manager to my office. When the person relation manager came to my office she was really concerned about my mood. She really requested to know why I was not even smiling at her the way I was used to doing. Still I insisted that nothing was wrong. She gave me a lot of charming words which I responded well but a smile was so far from me.Finaly she gave up after sometimes and went out
The fourth person I met was my uncle who had come to see me in my work place due to some family issues he wanted to discuss with me .When he talked to me and saw that I was not smiling even when he cracked a joke he was furious because he interpreted that I was not appreciating whatever he was telling me. We then finished the conversation and he went. When I was coming to see him off I met a former friend Mr Dickson who just asked me why I looked as if I was coming from a burial ceremony. I didn’t even respond. When I headed home I met a colleague from anther company Mr Jackson who after realising my behaviour just asked me if my husband had run away from me.From all the people I met that Monday I can really tell that people react differently from nonverbal communication.
One way is that each and every person that I met reacted to my change of behaviour (lack of smile). Some would react verbally by telling me some discouraging words while others would tell me some encouraging words. The ladies had a soft heart on me. They really tried to change my mood for the good but the gentlemen were hard on me they never took time to understand why I behaved so.In conclusion it can be seen from the above people will react differently to non verbal communication .Which ever signs one show have a certain message that is communicated. Different signs have different meanings in communication. (ronald 2005).
